Dēmos means “people.”
For nearly 25 years, Dēmos has been committed to building a just, inclusive, multiracial democracy and economy. Its work rests on the core theory that economic and political power are inextricably linked.
Dēmos utilizes research, legal advocacy, and narrative strategy to mobilize public support for policy solutions that benefit all Americans and restore power to the people, from voting rights to consumer protections. Their work has contributed to pro-voter reforms, such as expanding automatic voter registration, vote-by-mail, and expanded language access at the polls, and has successfully pushed back against voter purges and proof-of-citizenship proposals.

The Dēmos Power Scorecard, created in collaboration with the Camber Collective, assesses U.S. economic, civic, and political conditions state-by-state. Using metrics like voter turnout, access to local news, hate crimes, debt collections, and homeownership, it ranks states by their residents’ ability to exercise control over their own lives and futures. This interactive tool allows viewers to browse the data, revealing research-backed entry points to advance policies that promote economic mobility for all, economic security for all, full political participation, and an inclusive and expansive electorate in each state.
