Stephen Morrell, horticulturalist and landscape architect, leads an intimate tour of the Rockefellers’ Japanese-style garden and a conversation on the beauty and simplicity of Japanese gardens. Morrell will discuss the evolution of centuries-old design principles that inform Japanese gardens and how they can be adapted in America.
The Japanese Garden is not ADA accessible.
Between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., tour attendees may also visit the gallery at the DR Center to view Woven Wonders: Kykuit’s Picasso Tapestries, spotlighting eight large-scale weavings from Nelson Rockefeller’s collection.
Some parts of this tour will require walking uphill and on slippery or uneven terrain, gravel paths, and stairs. Please wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

Stephen Morrell graduated from the New York Botanical Garden School of Horticulture and holds the North American Diploma in horticulture from the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. His experience with Japanese culture comes from independent study tours in Japan and his practice of Zen Buddhism at Zen Mountain Monastery. His ongoing study of the tea ceremony provides a background in Japanese aesthetics.
