Amy Freitag

Amy Freitag has more than three decades of experience in the nonprofit, philanthropic, and government sectors. From 2022–2026, she served as president of The New York Community Trust, one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations. Prior to this role, Freitag was executive director of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, where she initiated the J.M.K. Innovation Prize and led grantmaking in criminal justice reform, climate change, democracy, and historical conservation.

Freitag previously was executive director of the New York Restoration Project, which led a private effort to plant one million new trees in New York City, and the Tortora Sillcox Family Foundation; U.S. program director for the World Monuments Fund; and deputy commissioner for capital projects with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation during the Bloomberg administration.

She served on the New York City Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments, and Markers and currently sits on the board of the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation. Freitag was raised in Akron, Ohio, and holds a B.A from Smith College and master’s degrees in landscape architecture and historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania.
