Woven Wonders: Kykuit's Picasso Tapestries opened on May 29 at The Pocantico Center.
The following first appeared in The Hudson Independent. The opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
A selection of wall-spanning tapestries based on designs by Pablo Picasso are now on view at the Pocantico Center through March 20, 2027. The selection is being exhibited there while Kykuit is closed for renovations. The tapestries, which were owned by Nelson Rockefeller, were previously exhibited in a basement space and are shown to advantage in the airy gallery at the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center. Visitors should register in advance to see the exhibition free of charge.
Possibly the most well-known tapestries in the U.S., the group of seven Unicorn Tapestries now at the Cloisters museum, filled the walls of the Rockefeller dining room in New York City during Nelson’s teenage years. His father, John D. Rockefeller Jr., acquired them; his mother Abby Aldrich Rockefeller co-founded the Museum of Modern Art. In the words of Pocantico Center curator Katrina London, the Picasso tapestries “marry these two traditions.”
