Revised China Program Guidelines Emphasize Integrated Approach

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund conducts reviews of each of its programs every three to five years. These reviews draw on grantee input, field engagement, and historical data to assess a program’s goal and strategies in context. They allow staff and trustees to reflect on the program’s overall direction, identify preliminary indications of impact, and make midcourse adjustments as needed.

Staff last conducted a review of the China program in early 2023—a moment of significant transition. The world was emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, and global discourse on key sustainability themes was shifting, complicating international cooperation on climate solutions.

We decided to revisit the China program guidelines in 2025 to ensure they reflect the realities of a truly post-pandemic era. The revised guidelines reflect a growing global emphasis on integrated approaches to environmental issues, situating China’s decarbonization efforts and technological advancements within a broader framework of interconnected processes that are shaping the planet’s future.

The program will continue to support grantee organizations that tap the scale and innovation capacity of the world’s second-largest economy to advance planetary sustainability and promote collaboration across geographic and sectoral boundaries. This support will elevate the complex connections between climate, biodiversity, economy, and human wellbeing, with the goal of advancing development in harmony with nature.
