Stichting Transnational Institute

Amsterdam
Netherlands

The Transnational Institute (TNI) is an international research and advocacy institute that produces analysis and solutions on key global issues that unite social movements, scholars, and policymakers. TNI works to expose the threat of undemocratic and ineffective international investment treaties that protect fossil fuel investors at the expense of the public.

In June 2018, TNI and Corporate Europe Observatory produced a report on the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT). The highly secretive Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system in the treaty allows companies and private investors to challenge public energy policies and seek billions in publicly- funded compensation for lost profits claimed by the fossil fuel industry, whose activities are already exacting a steep toll on our climate and health. The report has sparked calls for withdrawal from the treaty and parliamentary inquiries in various countries.
