Introducing an Emissions Control Area, like those established in Europe and North America is a necessary action for China's Pearl River Delta, according to a new report released by Civic Exchange and the University of Hong Kong. The report is designed to assist policymakers in regulating toxic exhaust emissions from marine vessels.

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has made revisions to its Southern China program guidelines, primarily aiming to refine the strategies under the environment and health goal. While there has not been a significant change in the direction of the Fund’s current work in southern China, the changes reflect the RBF’s grantmaking experience in the region over the past six years.

Although the ability to accumulate private wealth in China has only been possible in the past three decades, philanthropy is growing fast. The RBF's Southern China program team discusses the often complex issues around effective philanthropy and how exchanges with U.S. counterparts can help.

RBF grantees Center for Climate Strategies and Global Environmental Institute have been selected as one of six teams to participate in the U.S. Department of State and Chinese National Development and Reform Commission's EcoPartnerships program. The EcoPartnerships program was established to facilitate collaboration among Chinese and U.S. governments and organizations working toward advancing solutions to environmental issues.

RBF grantee Connexus Communications has produced a special five-part China Green series called "China/America: Green or Grey?" as part of its radio program, A World of Possibilities. Each part is an hour long, and contains in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs and green tech innovators in China and in the United States.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars has released a special edition of their China Environment Series. This 11th issue focuses on major energy trends in China and examines the energy and climate relations between the United States and China. 

The 2009 online annual review features two Southern China slidecasts. Included is a discussion with Richard Rockefeller, chair; Wendy O’Neill, trustee; and Stephen Heintz, president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund about the Rockefeller family’s history in China, and the evolution of the Fund’s Southern China program.

Earth’s future depends on the United States and China acting to curb greenhouse gas emissions. These two countries together account for over 40 percent of global emissions. Yet, both countries remain reluctant to commit to binding climate action, and attempts to find agreement between them veer between useful cooperation on clean energy technology and finger pointing in global climate talks.
