TRIAL International

Geneva

In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), TRIAL International provides free legal assistance to survivors of war crimes committed during the 1992-1995 war, with a special focus on victims of sexual violence, families of missing persons, and former concentration camp detainees.

In 2015, TRIAL represented a survivor in the first complaint filed against BiH at the United Nations Committee Against Torture. The ruling in the case called on the state to provide compensation, medical and psychological care, and an official apology to the victim. This landmark decision—CAT’s first relating to a victim of conflict-related sexual violence—declares that statutes of limitations do not apply to victims of torture and, further, states that BiH must establish a system to provide reparations to victims of war crimes, including sexual violence.
