Dancer and choreographer Sekou McMiller and friends perform highlights from Shine, a work-in- process that fuses music and dance, celebrates rhythmic nature, and unites cultures.

A “shine” is a solo sequence of footwork and body movement performed in partner dances like salsa, mambo, and cha-cha-cha to enhance the dance experience and inspire friendly competition. Sekou’s new work of the same name explores how individuals use their unique voices to enhance their collective progress in relationships and communities.

Inspired by the golden age of mambo at the Palladium nightclub in New York City during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Shine is the newest installment in McMiller’s Afro Latin Jazz and Soul Experience series, bringing together dancers, musicians, and composers.

A social dance lesson and reception with access to the exhibition in the DR Center gallery will follow the performance.

Presented in partnership with the Culpeper Arts & Culture Program and Works & Process.
