Support Grows for Regional Commission to Explore Truth and Reconciliation in former Yugoslavia

Nearly 150 artists, professors, journalists, and other professionals from countries of the former Yugoslavia signed a letter in support of the establishment of RECOM, the regional commission to identify and disclose facts about war crimes that occurred in the Balkans during the 1990s. The letter was released at a press conference in Sarajevo on October 7, 2011. It states that the atrocities have become the subject of their "professional research and artistic vision, the occasion for reflection and concern about the fate of memory and truth," and that the establishment of the RECOM initiative is necessary "in order to create a foundation for restoring dignity to victims, to meet their needs and rights, to determine the fate of forcibly disappeared persons, and to prevent the horrors of our common recent past from happening again."

RBF grantees working to establish RECOM include: the Center for Research, Documentation and Publication, Civic Association CRTA-The Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability, Humanitarian Law Center - Documentation and Memory, and Youth Initiative for Human Rights.
