Global Citizens' Climate Change Action Makes History

On October 24, 2009, thousands of ordinary citizens around the globe united for an international Day of Action on climate change. Led by RBF grantee Sustainable Market Foundation's 350.org campaign, the day has been recognized as the most widespread day of political action in history, involving 5,248 rallies spread across 181 countries. All events centered on the 350 number, derived from the 350 parts per million that scientists believe is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Highlights of the day included a game of Scrabble that spanned six continents, where activists from different nations formed giant human 3s, 5s, and 0s that were captured on video, film, and photographs. The images were sent via the Internet, displayed in public spaces such as the giant advertising screens in Times Square in New York City, and delivered to UN delegations.
