Advocates for the Establishment of a Regional Commission for Truth and Reconciliation Meet with EU Ambassadors

Advocates working toward the establishment of a regional commission (RECOM) to identify and disclose facts about war crimes that occurred in the Balkans during the 1990s, met with European Union ambassadors in Belgrade, Serbia on June 21, 2012. Maja Mićić of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, an RBF grantee, represented the coalition for RECOM, and with public advocates, Nataša Kandić and Dinko Gruhonjić, told ambassadors about the challenges of acquiring support from state institutions. They also asked for help in communicating with local politicians to ensure that the RECOM process will be a collaborative intergovernmental project. Ambassador Vincent Degert, the head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Serbia, reminded participants that establishing RECOM would contribute to stronger regional cooperation in acknowledging the past. The ambassadors were also presented with the first volume of the Kosovo Memory Book, a project that documents all of the names of those killed or missing during the war.

RBF grantees working to establish RECOM include: the Center for Research, Documentation and Publication, Civic Association CRTA-The Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability, Humanitarian Law Center - Documentation and Memory, and Youth Initiative for Human Rights.
