Pivotal Place: Western Balkans
The countries of the Western Balkans are working to realize their European integration aspirations, as accession brings with it the promise of stability and rule of law—necessary prerequisites for long-term peace, prosperity, and democracy. The Fund’s work in the Balkans, and especially in Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo, gives special attention to democratic practice and sustainable development requirements.
Croatian President Ivo Josipović, Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov, and Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović have appointed personal envoys to RECOM, the regional commission working to identify and disclose facts about war crimes that occurred in the Balkans during the 1990s. They will work with RECOM's Regional Expert Group, to review its draft statute and move forward in the establishment of RECOM.
On December 5, 2012, Forum for Civic Initiatives (FIQ) celebrated the role of philanthropy in helping to develop Kosovo's nascent economy, during its fourth annual Fides Awards ceremony. The Fides Awards recognized five organizations and individuals, who have shown an extraordinary commitment to investing in Kosovo and its citizens through philanthropy.
On December 6, 2012, Partners Albania, Center for Change and Conflict Management recognized five groups and individuals for their contributions to philanthropy in Albania, at its second annual Philanthropy Awards ceremony. The Rockefeller Brothers Fund grantee recognized individuals, families, and businesses for their generosity and commitment to improving the quality of life for fellow Albanians.
