What We Fund
The Rockefeller Brothers Fund supports charitable projects in the United States and abroad that seek to expand knowledge, clarify values and critical choices, nurture creative expression, and shape public policy.
To be eligible for a grant, organizations should be tax-exempt or seeking support for a project that would qualify as educational or charitable. The Fund’s grantmaking is organized around three thematic programs: Democratic Practice, Peacebuilding, and Sustainable Development, and two place-based programs: Southern China and Western Balkans. The Charles E. Culpeper Arts & Culture program, focused on New York, nurtures a vibrant and inclusive arts community in the Fund’s home city.
While the Fund works in a variety of geographic contexts, international grantmaking is primarily focused in its two international pivotal places: Southern China and the Western Balkans.
The RBF awards a limited number of Philanthropic Stewardship and Special Opportunities grants that support nonprofit infrastructure organizations and help to further the Fund’s mission, but does not accept unsolicited applications in these areas.

What We Do Not Fund
Support for Individuals
We do not provide grant support to individuals, including funding for education, health care, and travel to or attendance at conferences.
Meetings, Publications, and Films
We do not generally support meetings, publications or films, including documentaries, through its grantmaking, unless directly related to a Fund-supported project. Learn more about the use of The Pocantico Center for conferences.
The Fund strives to be a strategic funder in carrying out its mission. As such, we evaluate our grantmaking regularly and phase out lines of grantmaking as appropriate. No funding is available for phased-out programs. For more information about the RBF’s past grantmaking, visit the Past Programs page or see the Grants Search.
We do not award grants for capital expenses, including the construction and renovation of buildings.
