Heather McGhee’s Powerful Response to a Question on Prejudice

A video of a short exchange on race between RBF board member Heather McGhee and a caller from North Carolina has been viewed online more than two million times and garnered widespread media attention. McGhee, president of the public policy organization Demos, was the guest on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on August 18, when a caller who identified himself as a white male from North Carolina voiced fears that he has unconscious prejudice. He asked McGhee what he could do to change and “be a better American.”

McGhee acknowledged that the caller's ability to recognize his own bias was “one of the most powerful things that we can do right now in this moment in our history” and offered advice on how to move beyond his prejudice by interacting with the people in his community.
