Local Chinese Students and Families Put Energy Reduction in Motion

Abstract
Hundreds of students, their families, teachers, and neighbors from Nanmen Primary School in Doumen, Guangdong Province, attended an educational workshop on community-based energy efficiency and sustainable development on November 13, 2009. Activities included a display panel of notes filled with children and parents' hopes and expectations for children 10 years from now; an exhibition of creative calendars where youth recorded their own actions, household energy use, and thoughts on saving energy; a global warming video screening; and fun games where families explored how to conserve energy and lead more eco-sensitive lifestyles. Prizes awarded to winning participants consisted of energy efficient products such as LED lamps, chopstick cases, and reusable bags.
The workshop is part of the Institute of Sustainable Communities' pilot project, involving a series of public awareness and residential energy reduction activities in three communities in Guangdong Province. Building on the workshop's momentum, this RBF grantee and the Doumen community will further collaborate on new initiatives, such as publishing the calendars so that families can record their energy reduction ideas and actions, as well as a poster filled with useful energy-saving tips.
