Students Lead the Way on Energy Initiatives in Guangdong Province

Posted on 10/21/2009 in Pivotal Place: Southern China

How can small communities make tangible contributions to one nation's ambitious climate change goals? This fall, over 250 students and teachers are spearheading energy reduction and greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts in Nanmen village, Doumen, Southern China. The pilot project, under the auspices of Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), involves establishing a baseline for energy use and educating citizens about no/low cost measures they can take to reduce their household energy consumption and generate savings. It will be refined and expanded to all 70,000 residents in Doumen Township. ISC also will organize activities to raise public awareness of energy issues, and help Nanmen Primary School integrate energy efficiency into its curriculum and extracurricular activities to help increase residential efficient energy use by as much as 20 percent.
