COMET-ME

Jerusalem
Israel

Comet-ME is an Israeli-Palestinian organization providing basic energy and clean water services to off-grid communities in the South Hebron Hills using environmentally and socially sustainable methods. It opens the door to social and economic empowerment for some of the poorest and most marginalized rural communities in the occupied Palestinian Territories through the installation of renewable wind and solar energy systems, provision of clean water services, and reliable maintenance. COMET-ME’s center of operations is located in the South Hebron Hills and can rapidly respond to any issues, which has helped it become a reliable and trustworthy service provider in the region.

Access to regular electricity has profound effects on everyday life in these communities. Nighttime illumination and cell phones provide increased security and stability. Electric appliances and water pumps increase revenues for family dairy production and create time for women who would otherwise be hauling water, washing, and churning butter all by hand. To date, COMET-ME serves over 2,500 people in 25 communities in the Palestinian Territories and it is utilizing its experience to develop a stand-alone solar-powered water pump for use in developing countries worldwide.
